There are many fun and interesting facts about Halloween that few people are aware of. The history of Halloween began in ancient times with the Celts living on the British Isles. The Pagan calendar had October 31st as the last day of the year called Samhain. Celtic priests called Druids honored their god of death, known as Samhain, on the night of the 31st. The Celtic people believed that the spirits of the dead would rise on this night and wore costumes to scare them away, meanwhile the Druid priests would burn large fires. After the Roman empire gained control of the region Samhain also became a harvest festival honoring the goddess Pomona, the goddess of fruits and gardens. Apples were considered sacred at this time, and this was eventually where the tradition of bobbing for apples came from. The colors associated with Halloween came from this festival with orange representing the harvest and black representing death.

With the rise of Christianity the celebration under-went more changes. The first day of November for the Christians was known as All Saints Day. This was originally called All Allows Day. That made October 31st All Allows Eve. That is how Halloween got it's name. The people of Ireland and Scotland continued pagan practices for a long time after the introduction of Christianity helping to continue the traditions of Halloween. When Irish immigrants came to the United States they brought their Halloween traditions and costumes with them, helping to spread the holiday as we now know it.

These days around eighty-six percent of Americans decorate for Halloween, and ninety-nine percent of America's pumpkins are used for Jack-o-lanterns. First off, is our new customer gallery where our customers can get 10% off future orders just by sending us there pictures and videos of themselves wearing our fancy dress costumes at there party or event. Take a look at our first entry with a supported You Tube video from Sarah and her pals from the Bridgnorth YFC, fantastic and they won 1st prize.

We are in the process of adding a baby and toddler section with some truly amazing costumes from Travis. The costumes are pure class; many come with there own costume certificates and zipper travel bag.

The custom or tradition of dressing up has been around for many centuries. It was used by many cultures.

Masquerade parties were very popular in the 18th century. Hiding behind a mask caused a great deal of immoral behaviour and these parties were soon looked down upon.

The masks were no longer used and people started dressing up as the character of that era. These characters were mainly from stories of the time. Characters from poetry were also very popular. At later stages the foreign people, such as African and Red Indian slaves also become very popular at these parties.

In the 19th century fancy dress parties were used for almost any type of celebration, birthdays included. Even the Queen of the time, Queen Victoria loved to get dressed up for a fancy dress party.

All the popular costumes were still based on historical figures. In the 18th and 19th centuries, characters from the previous era were very popular. Character such as Oliver Twist and Romeo and Juliet were very popular at the time. Ladies preferred to go for elaborate, colourful costumes.

The ladies then started a new trend. They would go to these fancy dress parties in figurative costumes. They would dress up as summer, morning and night. These costumes became very popular amongst everyone. The ladies would dress up in these costumes, have them altered afterwards and they could be incorporated in their wardrobe for everyday wear.
